It was a loooong drive home. But it was a beautiful reunion between Paul and Mika... this will be our last blog.</div><br /><div></div><div>One of the nice things about driving is being able to see places you would never otherwise see. Some views were more impressive than others, like the vastness of Wyoming and the snow-capped peaks of Tetons and Rockies. But just as impressive were the crops (wheat, beans, potatoes, sunflowers, corn) that covered a gazillion acres. And the wild herds of antelope, deer that we never tired of seeing mostly in Wyoming. It also was interesting to see those gigantic wind generators in just about every state we were in (Texas, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming). </div><div></div><br /><div>We also saw some things that were somewhat disturbing, such as the cattle lots outside of Greeley, Colo. We will not soon forget the smell from the seemingly millions of cattle being held in gigangtic feed lots. Also, the apparent poverty on the Indian Reservations is always disappointing. Casinos obviously are not benefiting everyone, even though they are everywhere. Then there were the state rest stops and gas stations, some were worse than others, a lot worse. Enough said about that.</div><br /><div></div><div>Lochridge family reunion is on for next summer. Because no one will come to Texas in July, some of us discussed Montana -- Missoula/Philipsburg. They are pretty close. Pburg has a lot to offer: hiking to mining trails, Georgetown Lake, Philipsburg is a great place, RV, tenting areas... think about it. </div><div></div><br /><div>Lastly, thanks to all of you who followed our wonderful little journey back in time. We thoroughly enjoyed sharing it with you!! </div><br /><div></div><div>Mary & Paul</div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15635688335444767937noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-519467837919530621.post-91180640227881132282008-08-26T20:47:00.001-07:002008-08-28T14:09:14.448-07:00Family pics<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxGr08kwvNRemlh8mBMfuhJ8rkEylcOm5z2knMx-7Ez7_gztJeLpXl1qGYTw1UnajcjHq0gV0uN0gDNuVe_Lmb2vryfSDWwwnyI2-EfD6Mk50BeQIoPtriTFsAMBNkRmRa7ybxoSW9fnE/s1600-h/Philipsburg,+Wyoming,+Colorado+033.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239619092271442354" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxGr08kwvNRemlh8mBMfuhJ8rkEylcOm5z2knMx-7Ez7_gztJeLpXl1qGYTw1UnajcjHq0gV0uN0gDNuVe_Lmb2vryfSDWwwnyI2-EfD6Mk50BeQIoPtriTFsAMBNkRmRa7ybxoSW9fnE/s200/Philipsburg,+Wyoming,+Colorado+033.JPG" border="0" /></a> Paul nicely captured my brother Andy's gigantic house in Philipsburg, Mont. It has four rental units. Andy and Brenda live in one of the units and the others are being renovated. Andy has done all the work himself until recently. Of course the parents have helped when they visit him. The day we were there a guy he has hired had just put in new windows, the kind that stick out and you can put plants in them... Andy said it took the guy 5 hours to do what would have taken him the weekend to complete... See Manny in the bottom right-hand corner? Paul was in the car when he took the picture. Not bad. It is one of the more beautiful places in this country. My parents' place is an older A-frame across the road from the lake, up a hill. My kids call it the "tree house" because it is surrounded by trees and not really visible until you reach the bottom of their driveway. I really hate that I didn't take any pics of their house. They are pretty classic themselves. John always makes your stay more fun. He's probably the family favorite... we all admire that he has been working with at risk boys for 25ish years. The folks were gracious hosts, their place looks great. They both looked great. It was bittersweet saying goodbye to my folks yesterday, but we also are missing home (kids, dogs). We got to spend time with my brother Andy in Philipsburg, Mt., on the way. It's an historic mining town, great Main Street: we shopped and ate. Andy showed us his GIGANTIC compound really at the end of the town's main street (Broadway). In addition to a four apt. complex, his land continues up the hill where there is plenty room for Brenda's chickens and greenhouses and Andy's wood pile for the house's wood burning stove/forced air unit. Andy looked great and it was wonderful to meet his Brenda.<br /><br />We don't know how far we will get today. We discovered yesterday we don't really care for night driving. I will be posting more pics later!! Gotta get going.<br /><br />maryAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15635688335444767937noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-519467837919530621.post-12706678923207438922008-08-23T12:56:00.001-07:002008-08-23T13:36:10.809-07:00More pictures<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPC-nMl-YvaKke02IFXg8aKZTX8f-67GB7C1jLOzAUoIbdT-qbMyWxRncUr8-CYY6YbXOLd16TQyLMj3RAE0rUKgcrjuBvffMVyRobXPz4I87HNFQVkPWB7HMVZW95tmVJAAe-LQX67pk/s1600-h/tetons,+glacier+081.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5237812013502601666" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPC-nMl-YvaKke02IFXg8aKZTX8f-67GB7C1jLOzAUoIbdT-qbMyWxRncUr8-CYY6YbXOLd16TQyLMj3RAE0rUKgcrjuBvffMVyRobXPz4I87HNFQVkPWB7HMVZW95tmVJAAe-LQX67pk/s200/tetons,+glacier+081.JPG" border="0" /></a> My brother Jim had to play dog whisperer with his BIG dog Lola and tiny KoKo who believed he was alpha dog, but Lola disagreed. Today it is weather-worn and seemed a little darker. Still, it was sweet to be there. </div><div></div><br /><div>My brother John, Paul and I also visited the Dew Drop Inn. That was almost unrecognizable. Gambling machines line the walls and there are no tables to sit at. It is for sale: $1 million, but they will negotiate. Ha.</div><br /><div></div><div>We then went into Glacier Park and drove the Going to the Sun Highway. It was of course spectacular - and scary. We hiked up (and up and up) to a lookout (Ok, John and Paul made it there, I fell short by about a half mile). </div><br /><div></div><div>Frank and Shirley (my parents) stayed behind. It has been so great to spend time with them. Today we went to a classic boat show here in Lakeside and every person we were introduced to says how wonderful they are, how they have done so much for the community, how they like them yada, yada. They ARE wonderful people. </div><br /><div></div><div>Before we got here we stayed overnight Wednesday in Missoula with my brother Jim and his wife Dawn and kids Danny and Eddy. We got to spend time with my nephew Dan and his wife Lorie and kids Irelyn and Teya. It was a nice end to a looong drive. Of course we watched the USA women soccer beat Brazil for Olympic Gold!! Then we headed out...</div><div></div><div><strong>Droppings contest:</strong><br /></div><div>We got one guess on the droppings - Debbie Bishop - who will win the grand prize. She guessed raccoon, which we think is wrong. My nephew's book of such things shows it likely was elk for the larger scat and maybe fox for the small stuff. GOOD GUESS Debbie!! We not sure what your prize will be, but it will be good!</div><div></div><br /><br /><div></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15635688335444767937noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-519467837919530621.post-13483215786249244522008-08-19T15:41:00.000-07:002008-08-19T15:46:16.049-07:00Last day in WyomingToday we put about 100 miles on the car. Went to Jackson Lake for those of you who are familiar with this park. It's the biggest lake inside the park and home to a fancy lodge. Below are some of today's pictures. We saw a MOOSE and a BEAR!! Needed binoculars to see them, but we are pretty confident of what we saw. Also, we took pics of some animal droppings and are offering a prize for the first person to ID them correctly. We are excited about heading on to Montana tomorrow, but will miss Wyoming.<br /><br />Missoula people:<br />We will call when we get close. Thinking it will be early eve. Don't plan to feed us or anything, we are self-contained. We will certainly be thirsty tho... All we really require is a big TV to watch the women's national soccer team win Olympic GOLD!! It should be airing Thursday morning around 9. See ya soon!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15635688335444767937noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-519467837919530621.post-14633533318771380102008-08-19T15:31:00.000-07:002008-08-19T15:34:45.287-07:00What are these??<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzSKkM8sz3hoNprfiPKy9iXmYxaC9sFtRz7ozqmFpuuLdpp6PQ63kKXG0fVjH0xEhxQOeo71ohH5OINRPI8f7xPL7MOFct6Pozm-4EPmb6bmaTM7zSZ2HT128C95CG0LGGgHXn8XMrcDQ/s1600-h/day+5+065.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5236360733544341922" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzSKkM8sz3hoNprfiPKy9iXmYxaC9sFtRz7ozqmFpuuLdpp6PQ63kKXG0fVjH0xEhxQOeo71ohH5OINRPI8f7xPL7MOFct6Pozm-4EPmb6bmaTM7zSZ2HT128C95CG0LGGgHXn8XMrcDQ/s200/day+5+065.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHA2uL3CX06-7H8VprkV_um2Eby6XVqduKwgGTtKUrhRp2DtQhyZyz7Kb79NztdurJ2tVTZVP7yC15FqNwr6hol-A09vUZP1p_JPAExqbZz9ru5s0u9Lv5L3HEpcCoEVbxWo2blj5tIww/s1600-h/day+5+062.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5236360431619033778" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHA2uL3CX06-7H8VprkV_um2Eby6XVqduKwgGTtKUrhRp2DtQhyZyz7Kb79NztdurJ2tVTZVP7yC15FqNwr6hol-A09vUZP1p_JPAExqbZz9ru5s0u9Lv5L3HEpcCoEVbxWo2blj5tIww/s200/day+5+062.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div>Tell us what these droppings are and you win a prize!!! It was a cold and rainy day. My family prepared the food: turkey (brother John), potatoes (brother Jim), veggies (uncle John, grandmothers E and L) and fruit bowl (sister-in-law Jan and others??). My aunt Mary and Paul's mom, our beloved Lew, picked the flowers and ferns. I remember feeling so special all day. </div><div></div><div>John Trommater was best man and Jan Lochridge-Long was matron of honor. We decided we are going to stay put here at this gorgeous campground on the Snake River, 12 miles south of Jackson. We had a blast the first day, the second day was less fun... drove about 600 miles through mostly Kansas and some of Colorado. Ended up staying in Laramie. We are NOT the travelers we used to be. 25 years ago we drove from Daytona Beach to Sioux Falls in one sitting. Can't do that anymore.<br /></div><div>Today we got to drive through Wyoming, which I think is the MOST beautiful state. Haven't seen them all... but so much of nothing. Noticed some changes too. Alien-looking wind generators or whatever they are called (also saw some in Kansas). Lots of energy type activity... strip mining, miles and miles of pipes waiting to be buried... hmmmm.<br /></div><div>Also lots of antelope and deer and hawks.... We are planning to stay here for 3 nights, then head for Missoula on the 20th!!</div><div> </div></div></div></div></div></div></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15635688335444767937noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-519467837919530621.post-19948457325022502442008-08-15T18:25:00.001-07:002008-08-15T18:43:43.736-07:00Day OneToday we made it as far as Salina, Kansas. About 450 miles. We figure that will be about our speed for the rest of the trip. Paul is playing with the new flashlight. He's describing how cool it is because it has a cord you can hang it up with... <br /><br />We love being back in the Heartland. Did you know Kansas is the Sunflower State? We decided it should be called the Museum State. Here's some of the museums we saw billboards for between Wichita and Salina: Prairie Rose & Hopalong Cassidy Cowboy Museum, Coutts Museum, Kauffman Museum, Mennonite Heritage Museum, Smoky Hill Museum, and a ton more ... Just across from our campground is an "oldtime" museum. <br /><br />Tomorrow our goal is Cheyenne, Wyoming!!<br /><br />MaryAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15635688335444767937noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-519467837919530621.post-3174843935583311112008-08-13T16:55:00.001-07:002008-08-13T18:58:59.107-07:00What's so funny?<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNVOEh55wh0aoxCRnBs0RIskgKQFq_wgFlZ0KLHQ0q1N40V1xh1jB-DvR9PiwoGLAPRBHb5CngC2qjuiA4mlAUrc-W8ssn-SiDOg4O-pQ6t2JUgDS1lhMCmgu2j-Rhyz7-KrLk2ayaN50/s1600-h/wedding,+light,+dogs,+misc+086.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5234155601338910018" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNVOEh55wh0aoxCRnBs0RIskgKQFq_wgFlZ0KLHQ0q1N40V1xh1jB-DvR9PiwoGLAPRBHb5CngC2qjuiA4mlAUrc-W8ssn-SiDOg4O-pQ6t2JUgDS1lhMCmgu2j-Rhyz7-KrLk2ayaN50/s320/wedding,+light,+dogs,+misc+086.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br />Here's the first of many wedding pics I dug out. Dave, John and Jim are probably laughing about how they punked Paul the night before while partying at the Dew Drop Inn. There were about 10 of us there, my 3 older brothers, these 3, my sister-in-law, my friend Claire... minding our own business (drinking), when Big Foot comes over to our table demanding, "Are you Paul Stickney from Chicago?" Paul could not speak. Then the guy says "You got my 16-year-old daughter pregnant," while he starts moving toward Paul. My brothers are saying "you got the wrong guy," as the entire bar is now fixed on this mounting drama. In the meantime, I step between Big Foot and Paul and for some reason (adrenalin) I am tapping Big Foot's face with my open hand (not hard enough to say slapping) and repeat what my brothers were say "you got the wrong guy."<br /><br />Ok, so now a table nearby of drunk lumberjacks are wanting a piece of the action. That's when these 3 guys stepped in to say they had set the whole thing up. Big Foot, it turns out, was a tourist from California. He laughed, they laughed... it was awhile before we could laugh. Gotta admit it has made a good story to tell all these years!! Thanks guys.<br /><br />Mary<br /><br />P.S. The lumberjacks were bummed there wasn't a brawl.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15635688335444767937noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-519467837919530621.post-37652109814835077882008-08-13T05:18:00.000-07:002008-08-13T05:35:54.672-07:00We are ready!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjijEYYf4PB3ZLOsnhsmD6cAvO_ui6tIusulwxjXHerjFv0VCek-EX1Agtc3k5nN1XuAS7cZ03526Dh0X_332Y85rqy9Vp0TwaJ_k_IuZxxWaR48XditJoef2Z8mWz41bxNyqFfRdwcuRk/s1600-h/wedding,+light,+dogs,+misc+082.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233976791706840562" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjijEYYf4PB3ZLOsnhsmD6cAvO_ui6tIusulwxjXHerjFv0VCek-EX1Agtc3k5nN1XuAS7cZ03526Dh0X_332Y85rqy9Vp0TwaJ_k_IuZxxWaR48XditJoef2Z8mWz41bxNyqFfRdwcuRk/s320/wedding,+light,+dogs,+misc+082.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div>I guess it's possible we're over thinking this trip. It was love at first sight .... for Paul. Soon after meeting, Mary would discover Paul "lingering" at her apt. building or he would be walking through the halls of the communications building where he had no classes but where all of Mary's classes were. One afternoon, Mary looked up from her classroom to see Paul peering inside, grinning at her.<br /><br />Today we would call it stalking. Still, Paul prevailed and on August 19, 1978, they were married at Glacier Campground in Montana. Mary and Paul will be returning to Glacier Campground to mark their 30 years of marriage. That trip will begin August 15. We hope to communicate to all through this blog during our trip.<br /><br />Be kind in your comments, our children will be reading this. <br /><br />Montana or Bust!!!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15635688335444767937noreply@blogger.com10
